This brave bird sits in 56 degrees Celcius heat out in the open sun, to rotect eggs: Red wattled Lapwing, with its mouth open and braving the terrible summer heat of a Delhi summer with the temperature going to 52.90 Celcius in the shade. With one chick just having got out of its egg, and another chick two days old, this mother Lapwing is in panic! Her third egg is just not hatching and she cannot divert attention from the two roving chicks to permanently sit on the lone egg. She is in a real quandary. She calls out in panic as a Shikra raptor is swooping low overhead to try and pick up one of its chicks. She screams to warn the chick to not move and sit tight in the tall grass, not being able to leave the egg exposed to the hot sun, and all this while panting away in the heat, and frantic
