Using breakthrough Israeli hybrid varieties and low altitude root-stock, one now has apple trees laden with red delicious variety at low altitude Apple orchards in the Nainbagh - Ghorakhuri belt along the Yamuna river in Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Not just are they high yielding, but they grow at a relatively modest altitude of just 3000 feet above mean sea level, in a warm temperature belt. Thus, these apple varieties do not require winter chilling as is the case with other apple types. Even more intriguingly, the apples here mature and are harvested as early as July at the beginning of the monsoon season, and not after the monsoon and in the autumn as is the case with the high altitude Harsil apples.
