These are encroached farmlands on the natural riverine flood plains of the Yamuna river in Delhi. By using public land for agriculture, these farmers are not only breaking ownership and usage rights but also threatening their own lives and families and the land they till. When the river floods over, these flood plains will be first hit, and the rains could well sweep away these families. The Delhi Development Authority tried to clear these flood plains with a massive clearing up of the farmlands, by sending in bulldozers and heavy machinery to destroy the crops and houses.
