A Hodgson's Redstart would look similar but this is a male Black Redstart. Black Redstart in its summer breeding grounds in Ladakh, preening and cleaning its feathers, opening its mouth / gaping and stretching and apparently exercising! This is the same Redstart, Nikhil Devasar tells us, that we see in Delhi and across the north, on its winter sojourn down to the plains... The Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) is a small passerine bird in the redstart genus Phoenicurus. Like its relatives, it was formerly classed as a member of the Thrush family (Turdidae), but is now known to be an Old World flycatcher (Muscicapidae).
