Chamba is a gateway town situated on a crossroads col that has roads leading in to it from Mussoorie and Dhanolti on one side, Rishikesh and Narendranagar from another and a higher road leading up to Ranichauri where M. L. Dewan once did a lot of planting work. On the other side, one can drive down to the Tehri Dam and the new Tehri township, and onwards along the Bhagirathi Ganga valley to Chinyalisaur, Baldhiana, Uttarkashi and beyond to the lovely mountains around Gangotri. Ever seen an open garbage dump in the Himalaya? Come to Chamba town and you'll be treated to the sight along the main road itself.
