The South Portal of the Atal Tunnel, also known as the Rohtang Tunnel, in Himachal Pradesh, opens into a steep Himalayan mountain landscape. The tunnel entrance is built into the mountainside, with a concrete retaining wall protecting the approach road from loose rock and landslides. A small check post and maintenance vehicle are visible near the entrance. Inside the tunnel, the road runs beneath a curved concrete structure fitted with rows of overhead lights, ventilation systems, utility pipes and safety equipment. Beyond the tunnel, the route continues through a rugged mountain valley, with steep rocky slopes, dry grass and patches of vegetation surrounding the paved road.
