Burned paddy fields on outskirts of Amritsar, Punjab. Farmer burned paddy stubble since wheat is a Rabi crop, farmers are compelled to harvest paddy as well as make sure the field is ready for the next round of sowing. For farmers, burning the paddy straw is an easy way out though it results in lots of air pollution in the atmosphere. Every year in Punjab, about 7 to 8 million metric tonnes of paddy residue is burnt openly. Toxic chemicals, which result in respiratory problems, are released in the atmosphere. Farmers burn the paddy stubble as it involves no cost. Burning fields also affects the quality of the soil, robbing it of vital nutrients.
