Winter air pollution across North India due to crop burning in Punjab. Aerial view of burning residue in the field of Punjab, these crop burning releases lots smoke into the atmosphere which affects health. Every year in Punjab, about 7 to 8 million metric tonnes of paddy residue is burnt openly. Toxic chemicals, which result in respiratory problems, are released in the atmosphere. Farmers burn the paddy stubble as it involves no cost. Burning fields also affects the quality of the soil, robbing it of vital nutrients. Crop residue burning was notified as an offence under the Air Act of 1981, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and various appropriate Acts.
