Asian Giant Hornet on Cathedral Bells Flower

A striking moment in nature where a large hornet visits the beautiful Cup-and-Saucer Vine (Cobaea scandens) flower. Native to Mexico, this vigorous climbing plant produces large bell-shaped blooms that start as creamy green and gradually change to a deep rosy-violet or purple as they mature. Because of its distinctive flower shape, the plant is also commonly known as Cathedral Bells or Monastery Bells. Resting on the bloom is a large hornet that resembles the Asian Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia), the world’s largest hornet species, which can reach body lengths of around 45 mm. These hornets often feed on nectar and tree sap, though they are also known as predators of honeybee colonies. Some similar-looking species include the Yellow-vented Hornet (Vespa analis).
