As one moves further north to the high altitude Himalaya, one finds communities involved in protecting the Snow Leopard, an elusive but strikingly beautiful species. This mysterious cat inhabits alpine and sub-alpine areas at an altitude of 3000 to 4500 m. Resource crunch on the snow-clad mountains leads the leopard to hunt villagers’ livestock, resulting in man-animal conflict. The Project Snow leopard was initiated by Govt. of India along with Snow Leopard Conservancy and Snow Leopard Trust with focus on joint management of the area with the local communities. The man-animal conflict was minimized by developing and distributing predator proof improved livestock corrals and a Livestock Insurance program was initiated. Since then local livelihoods have been improved by initiating ‘Himalaya
