Thousands of Demoiselle Cranes (Anthropoides virgo), locally known as Kurjan, Koonj or Kurja, gather in the skies over Rajasthan, India, during their annual winter migration. Large flocks of these migratory birds fly across the dawn landscape, creating a remarkable aerial spectacle over the desert. Demoiselle Cranes are the smallest crane species and undertake one of the world's most demanding long-distance migrations. Their journey begins in breeding grounds across Mongolia and Central Eurasia before continuing south toward the Indian subcontinent. During migration, many flocks cross the Himalayan mountain range, travelling through high-altitude routes before reaching wintering areas in northwestern India.
