Pika is the animal that inspired the popular Pokemon character Pikachu. This specific species, Ochotona roylei, also called Royle’s Pika or Himalayan Mouse Hare, as the name suggests, can be seen in the Hymalaias, through northwestern India, Pakistan, Kashmir, Nepal and Tibet (Smith et al. 1990). There’s also evidence of quite similar rodents in western China but these records should be attributed to O. macrotis chinensis (Bhattacharrya et al. 2009), a cousin of our friend up there, in the video. This cute fella benefits the ecosystem. Their burrows make great homes for birds (like the Scaly Breasted Wren Babbler from Nepal) that often disappear when pikas are poisoned, which results on the collapse of the burrows (Khana 2007).
