Barchey village in the Kargil district of Ladakh from above. The village sits among the mountains at an elevation of around 2,676 metres (8,780 feet) and is surrounded by the rugged landscape of the Himalayas. Groups of houses are built along the mountain slopes, connected by winding roads that pass through the village. The houses have the flat-roofed style commonly seen in this part of Ladakh, with a mix of traditional stone and mud-brick buildings and a few newer homes with metal roofs. A building with a green roof and a golden finial stands near the centre of the village and serves as a local mosque or community building.
