The Kuldhara village is located 18 kms to the west of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan in the heart of the Thar desert very close to the India-Pakistan border. The village was established by Kuldhar sub-caste of Paliwal Brahmins 1291. it used to be wealthy and prosperous village but was deserted by the residents due to several reasons. The richness and prosperity can be seen in the wells, water tanks, temples and cenotaphs. The Kuldhara village is a conglomerate of 84 abandoned villages that make one feel that one is walking through an excavated archaeological site belonging to another epoch, when one walks through them. It encompasses most of the area of the large, inhospitable Great Indian Desert (Thar Desert), which has an edge paralleling the Sutlej-Indus river valley along its border with Pakista
