Muslim Gujjars of Uttarakhand's mountains come down from Uttarkashi to Rishikesh and Dehradun during winters with their livestock. They also shelter in Chilla forest range and Motichur forest range of Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand. They have their Deras in the forest and while it is protected, there is controversy as to whether they should be allowed to bring in livestock to a protected national park, as diseases can spread from livestock to wild animals. A nomadic Muslim Gujjar speaks about his lifestyle. He says, "We live near Uttarkashi and we come down to the Dehradun and Rishikesh during winters with our livestock. I have 10 - 12 buffalos and two horses. We move to the higher mountains during summers. I sale milk for survival. I have one son who is married and have two sons. It
