Autumn in the Himalaya brings with it a different set of flowers from summer flowers. Gentians, Edelweiss, Saussureas, dry Anaphalis flower heads, Aconitum violaceum and more dominate the fall season flowering in the high mountains. The trek to Roopkund brings many floral surprises as one crosses the alpine meadows of Ali and Bedni buggyal. Saussurea gossypiphora commonly known as snowball plant (Hindi:कस्तूरी कमल, kastūrī kamal; Nepali: कपासे फूल, kapāsē phūl) is a perennial herbaceous plant. It is reputed to have medicinal properties according to traditional Chinese medicine. It is native to the Himalayas, and found at altitudes of 4300–5600 m.
