Salim Ali, the famous Indian ornithologist, famously described the breeding biology of the Common Baya or Weaver Bird (Ploceus philippinus.). On completing most of its nest, up to the chin-strap point (as seen here), the male puts up an elaborate display in order to court the female who visits the nest to inspect the construction. On being satisfied with the preparations, she pairs up with the male in question, mating with him and proceeding to adopt the nest as its own, laying her eggs and helping complete the construction by way of the lengthy entrance tube. The nests are made of strips of grasses such as the kaas which grow aplenty during these pre-monsoon summer months.
