A Yellow-crowned Woodpecker perched on a tree branch in the forests around Kumbhalgarh, Rajasthan. The Yellow-crowned Woodpecker is a small woodpecker species native to the Indian subcontinent and is commonly found in dry deciduous forests, wooded scrublands, and semi-urban green areas. The bird is identifiable by its bright yellow crown, black-and-white spotted upperparts, and pale streaked underside. This individual appears to be a male due to the visible red patch on the hindcrown, a feature usually absent in females. The woodpecker is repeatedly tapping and probing the tree bark with its strong bill while clinging vertically to the branch — a typical feeding behavior used to locate insects, larvae, and hidden invertebrates beneath the bark surface.
