Such is the Lapwing's breeding biology that it chooses the peak of summer to lay its eggs and that too, out in the open, in the blazing Indian summer sun where it often gets to 50 degrees Celcius or more, in the open sun. And unlike other birds which have to incubate or warm their eggs, the titeeri or Red-wattled Lapwing actually cools its belly by wetting it and then sitting atop the eggs, in order to keep them cool and moist in the brutal and dry heat around it. See how it keeps its beak open to aid in transpiration. What a mammoth task it has taken upon itself, day in and day out until the chicks hatch, and then the task becomes no easier...
