Glowing Fungi of the wild Bioluminescent Mushrooms

These small white fungi are likely bioluminescent mushrooms, most commonly identified as Mycena chlorophos. They are well-known for their striking green glow visible in the dark. Scientific Name: Mycena chlorophos. Common Names: They are often called "night-light mushrooms" in Japan (yakoh-take) and "green pepe" in the Bonin Islands. Appearance: In daylight, the mushrooms have a pale brownish-grey, bell-shaped cap on a thin, translucent stem. They grow in groups on decaying woody debris. Bioluminescence: The caps and gills of the mushroom produce a pale green light through a chemical reaction involving a compound called luciferin and an enzyme called luciferase, in the presence of oxygen. The glow is most intense when the mushroom is young and fades as it matures. Habitat and Distribution:
