A cluster of giant puffball mushrooms (Calvatia gigantea) sits quietly on the forest floor, their large, white, round bodies standing out even among messy surroundings of mud, waste, fallen leaves, and small pieces of garbage. Tiny ants crawl across the surface of the young puffballs, exploring every curve as a part of the natural ecosystem. Despite the untidy environment, these mushrooms have significant value. When young and firm, giant puffballs are edible and used in cooking, especially in soups, pan-fried dishes, and traditional recipes across different regions. They are rich in protein, low in calories, and appreciated for their mild, earthy flavor.
