Shri Badrinath Dham, a major Hindu pilgrimage site in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, is situated in a rugged valley of the Garhwal Himalayas. The colorful Badrinath Temple stands above the Alaknanda River, surrounded by hotels, houses and other buildings on the steep valley slopes. Pedestrian bridges and walkways cross the river, including a decorated entrance arch bearing the words “जय बद्री विशाल” (Jai Badri Vishal). Concrete embankments, retaining structures and riverside pathways are visible along sections of the Alaknanda. Snow-dusted rocky peaks, green pine trees and low clouds form the mountainous backdrop around the temple town.
