Now called a Flameback but previously and always known to us as the good old Golden-backed Woodpecker, a Katphora it will always remain! Inquisitively peeking out of its newly excavated nest hole, the Woodpecker surveys its new domain... This Katphora or Golden-backed Woodpecker (now known as the Lesser Flameback) lives up to its name, by excavating a nest-hole within the dead tree trunk of a Casuarina tree at our Orchard in Delhi. With its bright flame-back golden wings and back, and its jaunty red crest, it is a colourful and cheery bird to behold, as it claims its territory in the arboreal spaces of our city, and prepares to lay eggs within the tree hole cavity, and bring up a brood of little Woody woodpeckers!
