A Striated Heron, also known as the Little Heron (Butorides atricapilla), in a wetland habitat in India. The bird is identifiable by its compact build, bluish-grey upperparts, and dark crown. Striated Herons inhabit a variety of freshwater and coastal environments, including ponds, marshes, lakes, rivers, and mangrove ecosystems. The species is known for its patient hunting behavior, often remaining motionless before striking at fish, amphibians, or aquatic invertebrates. In India, the species is increasingly referred to as the Little Heron to distinguish it from related populations found elsewhere. The footage documents a small wading bird in its natural feeding environment.
