Bivouacing in the Himalaya: a demonstration

Trainees from the NIM Adventure course number 224 learn how to make a bivouac shelter. A bivouac shelter is any of a variety of improvised camp sites, or shelters that are usually of a temporary nature, used especially by soldiers, or persons engaged in backpacking, scouting, or mountain climbing, a temporary camp without tents or cover, used especially by soldiers or mountaineers. It is the preparation for an unplanned night stay. Trainees use rope, ground sheets, poles and pegs to set up the bivouacs. First the rope is sewn through the holes in the ground sheets to connect them and then the ground sheets are fixed to the ground using small tent pegs. Poles are used to hold up the ground sheets.
