A tiny chick of the Red-wattled lapwing (Vanellus indicicus) rests quietly among the dry leaves on the forest floor, its mottled brown-and-cream down blending perfectly with the earthy tones around it. This natural camouflage shields the vulnerable youngster as it lies still, trusting the forest’s patterns to keep it hidden. After a long pause, the chick slowly rises, revealing uncertain yet determined steps as it begins to explore the world on its own.
