A flock of Red-crested Pochards (Netta rufina) gathers along a shallow section of the Mahanadi River near Cuttack, Odisha, creating a striking winter wildlife spectacle. These migratory diving ducks are among the most colorful waterfowl found in India during the winter season. The scene shows numerous pochards swimming peacefully in open water while others rest and forage near the moss-covered riverbank. Male Red-crested Pochards are easily recognized by their bright reddish-orange heads, vivid red bills, and contrasting black breasts, while females display more subdued brown plumage.
