Step farming in the hills of Uttarakhand along a road that leads to Guptkashi in Garhwal. Smaller dams may not be as harmful or damaging as larger ones, but dams are dams and their construction leads to a lot of habitat disturbance, a high carbon footprint from the cement and building activity and uncertainty of their efficacy over a medium length of time. The Ganga river valley is already prone to earthquakes and flooding. One big flood and a dam can be rendered rather useless. It can silt over and no longer hold water.
