Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a widespread resident of the Indian Subcontinent. Orange ear coverts, pale greenish-blue upperparts, and paler orange underparts. Females have orange-red on lower mandible of the beak/ Juvenile is similar to adult, but duller and greener above, with dusky scaling on breast. A.a.taprobana (peninsular India and Srilanka) is brighter and bluer than the widespread bengalensis. Voice : Call is a high-pitched shrill chee, usually repeated and chit-it-it alarm call. Habitat : Fresh waters in open country, also mangroves and seashore in winter.
