This is a rather non-typical means of tea leaf collection. What Kanan Devan Hills Plantations (and their Ripple Tea brand) calls Premium Dust (surely an oxymoron, as tea dust is the poorest quality of leaf leftover that goes into tea bags!), these women seem to collect a range of leaf sizes, from smaller to larger. To hell with two leaves and a bud! They cut the leaves with a rudimentary chopper, gathering them into a bag. This is an unusual process for someone who is used to the tea gardens of Darjeeling and Assam where tea leaf is collected in a far more delicate and sophisticated fashion. But then Tata Tea doesn't exactly cater to the top end of the market!
