All pheasants and many birds have mud baths on occasion, to clean their feathers of ecto-parasites and maintain feather hygiene. A fully mature Peacock (Pavo cristasus ) is filmed taking a mud bath at our Wilderness Orchard, Delhi. The big and proud bird digs a shallow area with mud and splashes the dirt all over its colourful feathers. The birds also try for the dirt to reach the long train of tail feathers. Mud baths are vital for avian species to protect themselves from ectoparasites. this will also make the feathers healthy. Some birds are either seen taking a water bath or a mud bath.
