Himalayan fox crossing the Zanskar river, at Padum or Padam, Zanskar, Jammu & Kashmir state, India. We filmed this in the peak of winter when the Zanskar river was frozen over. The fox looked for a suitable spot to cross to the other side, and found it here, below the gompa above the town! Once he catches up on his old trail and recent smells seem familiar, he starts loping along, on the previous tracks! The terms Himalayan wolf and Canis himalayensis have been suggested by several Indian biologists for recognition as a critically endangered canid species, distinct from Canis lupus. In its morphological features, social and reproductive behavior, the Himalayan wolf resembles the Tibetan wolf, Canis lupus chanco.
