Mahakala statue overlooking the Tsarap River in the Zanskar region of Ladakh, India. Mahakala is one of the principal Dharmapalas (protector deities) in Vajrayana Buddhism, revered as a guardian of the Buddhist teachings and traditionally depicted in a wrathful form symbolising the removal of obstacles and the destruction of ignorance. The statue stands on an elevated circular viewing platform with stone steps and protective railings, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Below the platform, the turquoise Tsarap River flows through a narrow rocky gorge, while the Phuktal Bridge provides an important pedestrian crossing on the trekking route to Phuktal (Phugtal) Monastery, one of Ladakh's most remote Buddhist monasteries, built into a cliffside cave in the Zanskar
