A solo Great Egret or Common Egret (Ardea alba) is seen among reeds in the grassland in coastal Odisha. It's perfect fishing technique is a tribute to its physiology. How on earth does it keep up that long slender neck without getting a neck ache? The perfect dives it makes for fish are silent and reach out further afield from its body, like a nice long fishing rod! The outer wing retrice feathers are dainty and delicate due to the breeding season in progress in this Odisha wetland. Watch the egret approach a possible prey with calculated and steady steps. Once near the prey, the bird steadily folds its neck for the final pounce.
