In the rugged landscape of the Chambal region, spanning parts of Madhya Pradesh, local villagers often share deeply personal and historical perspectives about dacoits who once dominated the ravines. According to one villager’s account, earlier dacoits were often seen as “baaghi” — rebels shaped by personal enmity, land disputes, caste conflicts, or social injustice. Many, he explains, turned to outlaw life after violent clashes or unresolved feuds. In those days, there was said to be a code of honor and reputation attached even to criminal acts. However, he contrasts that past with the present, stating that modern dacoity gradually shifted toward financial gain.
