A Common Castor butterfly (Ariadne merione) resting on a fallen dry leaf in a wilderness orchard. The Common Castor (Ariadne merione) is a butterfly species found across India and many parts of South and Southeast Asia. It is recognized by its orange-brown wings with dark wavy markings that allow it to blend with dry leaves on the ground. Butterflies often rest on leaves to regulate body temperature before flying again in search of nectar or host plants. The larvae of the Common Castor (Ariadne merione) mainly feed on plants of the castor family, particularly the Castor Oil Plant (Ricinus communis), from which the butterfly gets its common name. Such observations show butterfly activity in orchards and natural habitats, where insects interact with plants and their surrounding environment.
