The sulky Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) chick is all open gape, lacking in confidence, even nervous and diffident! The mother raises the panic meter and alarms the neighbourhood that its chick is venturing out into the world, and all must pay heed and accord safety and respect to the young one. The chick hops around on the ground, unable to fly. This is the most nervous period for the parents as one wrong step and a cat or a crow could just carry away the chick and turn it into one juicy morsel...
