We were camped out in the grasslands of the lower Himalaya during one of our expeditions to try and re-discover the thought-to-be-extinct Mountain Quail. Our Golden Retriever Smurfy was used to flush the supposed Quail from the grass, as advised (to use dogs!) by the late ornithologist Salim Ali. A Himalayan Pied Woodpecker sits on a heavily-lopped Oak or Quercus incana tree while a Great Hill or Himalatan Barbet hides on a fruiting tree with berries. A raptor hovers over-head - is it a Mountain Hawk Eagle or a Short-toed Eagle? Tell us, raptor expert folks!
