Cherry Blossoms in the Himalayas are no less spectacular than the famed displays of Japanese sakura, though here the magic unfolds in autumn. At Jabarkhet Nature Reserve, the Wild Himalayan Cherry (Prunus cerasoides), locally known as Padum or Padam, bursts into delicate shades of pink against the backdrop of misty mountain forests. Unlike the spring-blooming Japanese cherries, this Himalayan species flowers in the post-monsoon season, transforming hillsides into soft pastel landscapes when most other trees begin to shed. The blossoms attract a vibrant array of birdlife. Species such as the Black Bulbul (Hypsipetes leucocephalus) and the Green-backed Tit (Parus monticolus) can be seen feeding on nectar and insects among the blooms.
