Javed Akhtar says "I remember very well when Aamir Khan came to my place and gave a brief of Lagaan and said that he would tell me the story in two days. Then after two days, the director of the film Ashutosh Gowarikar came to my place to narrate the script and when I heard the script I felt that this is a chance to write different songs as it was a new and fresh story. The story is based in the past in a village which is rare this these in commercial cinema."
