Fly over the field of chortens or stupas near Shey and also over Thiksey Gompa in Ladakh. Scattered across a field next to the Indus river, is one of the largest chorten fields of Ladakh, with hundreds of chortens. Then fly over Thikse monastery gompa on its own bare brown hillside to one side of the Indus river valley. Thiksey Gompa or monastery is linked to the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is an awe-inspiring structure that sits on top of a hill just outside Leh town. The Indus river can be seen in the distance in the Leh-Choglamsar valley.
