Soma Gompa is a large modern gompa just around the corner from Leh's Main Bazar. It"s also the location of the Ladakhi Buddhist Association, a conservative political organisation, with ties to Hindutva groups. Soma Gompa is one of the newer monasteries in town. The prayer hall here lacks the rich decorations seen in older monasteries in rest of Ladakh. One can visit the monastery to watch the gathering of monks for early morning prayers. Leh was the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, now the Leh District in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Leh, with an area of 45,110 km2, is the second largest district in the country (after Kutch, Gujarat) in terms of area.
