Known by several names all over India (Champak, Chapa, Chenbagam, Leihao, Sopa), the Sampige is as ubiquitously Indian as any flowering tree can get. Ancient texts sing praises of the seductive fragrance of its yellow flowers. Isobutyl acetate, the primary component of Champaca oil, gives the flowers their fruity-foresty fragrance, detectable from several hundred meters away. Sampiges are ancient trees, belonging to the Magnolia family, dating back 95 million years! Some of their prehistoric traits have been preserved intact over the millennia. The flowers, for example, don't have sepals like most of their modern counterparts do. Instead, they have tepals, petal-like structures that protect the flowers when they are budding.
