Abrus precatorius, also known as Rosary pea or Ratti is a black and red hard seed that was used to weigh jewellery and gem stones in India, as the seeds had a uniform weight. So one could ask for a "2 ratti Ruby" from a jeweller in India! The fine green pinnate leaves belong to the Ratti or Abrus precatorius creeper which also has green seed pods (before they mature) and delicate pink and lilac flowers. Also see flowers of the Impatiens or Balsam (Impatiens balsamina), a monsoon flowering flowering plant that is native to South Asia.
