Uttarakhandi porters carry heavy loads as mountaineers trek into the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Crossing the Leta Kharak pass towards Malatuni and Dharanshi, a clear view can be had of the grasslands and the mountains beyond, including Bethartoli Himal. Nanda Devi mountain is considered the most difficult Himalayan peak conquered before World War II. Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, the first conqueror of Mount Everest, has admitted that it was Nanda Devi was the hardest he gained the upper hand. The standard approach to the south ridge route, from the Milam Valley to the east, passes through Lawan Glacier via Lawan Gad and thence to Longstaff Col.
