A lone Asian elephant ( elephas maximas indicus) crosses a dirt road towards the other side. It looks like a head-turner for poachers with its pair of off-white tusk. Elephants use their tusks for digging, foraging, stripping barks of trees, defense or in combat with other elephants for mating rights. Some elephants have a single tusk or no tusk at all. Poachers hunt the elephants for their tusk. The ivory from the tusk is used in making billiard balls, piano keys, and other luxury items. This fuels poaching of elephants.
