In September the city of Pune becomes the focal point of India's tourism map. Built around the traditional festivities of the Ganesha Chaturthi Pune assumes the role of India's cultural capital. No doubt the elephant headed God is the central focus but around it is structured a spectacular pageant and a series of cultural and sports event that showcases the richness of the Indian heritage. The Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over Maharashtra amidst festivities but it is here that the affair has been institutionalized and in the past six years the relentless efforts of his organizers have resulted in the festival fast becoming the high point of India's cultural calendar.
