Vibrant atmosphere of the Gangasagar Mela, one of India’s largest religious gatherings held annually on Sagar Island in West Bengal where the Ganges meets the Bay of Bengal. Thousands of pilgrims move through the crowded fairgrounds during the early morning hours beneath decorative lighting and festival banners marked with “Gangasagar.” Devotees wrapped in winter clothing, shawls, sweaters, and jackets can be seen carrying luggage and bundles as they arrive from different parts of India to participate in the sacred pilgrimage and ritual bathing ceremonies. Temporary camps, roadside stalls, tents, and festival infrastructure stretch across the mela grounds to accommodate the enormous seasonal influx of visitors.
