75% of the population in Bhutan depends on agriculture. Bhutan imports 6,000 to 7,000 metric tonnes of rice every year according to Singay Dukpa, the Deputy Managing Director of the Foodgrain Division of the Food Corporation of Bhutan. Rice is generally planted once a year. The seeding of a nursery bed usually takes place in March, the transplanting in May and the harvesting in October. By the beginning of March, The farmers will plough the field thoroughly with the help of two buffaloes or by using the power tiller to increase their productivity with reduced effort and risk. Once we are done ploughing the field, they design the rice terraces to control the flow of water and puts the seeding of the grain to grow.
