Indian farmers harvest apples in Himachal Pradesh. Farmers are doing selective harvesting of apples and they are carrying apples inside the bamboo basket to apple mandi. Apple is the most important fruit crop or cash crop of the hill State and constitutes about 49 per cent of the total area under fruit crops about 85 per cent of the total fruit production. Himachal is in the western Himalayas and it is a mountainous state. Himachal Pradesh's apple boom is credited to Satyanand (Samuel Evans Stokes Junior), an American missionary who first introduced high-quality apples in the Kothgarh Thanedar belt in upper Shimla in the early 1920s.
